Aspen trees struggle to adopt to flat land. Since they are a "stand" (group) tree, they die-off and regenerate as part of their normal life pattern. Aspens are the centerpiece of many a Front Range landscape; it takes some effort to keep the tree vibrant.

"Aspen leaf spot, or ink spot can be prevented through good cultural practices. Rake up the leaves in the fall and fertilize, " said Jeff Disler, Plant Health Care Consultant for ArborScape.

A bad winter will not send an aspen into decline but does affect how it looks. Remember that an aspen has a short life span, around 30 years. The organic option is again employ cultural practices that count.

It's important to persistently fertilize aspens and spray them for aphids during the summer and scale during the crawler stage in March and later in the season. Scale leaves an unnaturally smooth sheen on aspens which can can choke its transpiration. Cytospora canker causes aspens to have a short life span. Leaf spot or ink spot is a minor fungal disorder that can discolor the leaves.

Aspen Tree Trimming - Trimming dead and diseased branches can help the aspen regenerate and slow disease cycles. They are lovely ornamentals especially in a xeriscaped installation and require less shaping making all but the tallest trees cheaper to trim.

Aspen Tree Removal - Removing an aspen is relatively cheap because of its growth pattern and small mass. Keeping them removed can be a different story. It is a challenge to get all of the root structure. Once the trunk is removed, we recommend grinding that stump down as well as treating it with a growth inhibitor.
