Cottonwood Tree Care

Cottonwoods, at least the variety (narrow leaf or plains) found in your Denver HOA or neighborhood, grow fast. Their water uptake is vigorous and they tend to thrive more easily than other species.  This makes them desirable as a shade tree and a low maintenance ornamental. They are also cheaply priced.

However, cottonwood branches break easily and are vulnerable to cytospora canker which can hollow out leads and branches.  Causing something like this to happen.

Trimming a Cottonwood - Cottonwoods are ubiquitous in Colorado.  Those huge branches hanging over your house must have the dead wood trimmed out.  Also , your insurance company may request that you remove a cottonwood  too close to the house.  Obviously the actuarial tables they keep are telling you something.

Cottonwood Plant Heath Care - Typically cottonwoods are pretty tough. They may require a good fertilization and spraying for aphids or borer.  Cottonwood roots love to run along the surface of the soil. They do this for oxygen and water.

Removing a Cottonwood-   It's a good idea to plant a more desirable tree species close to a cottonwood and remove the cottonwood before it gets too big to remove economically.  Over half of the dangerous trees we remove are cottonwoods.
