It’s Earth Day, which means the weather is finally starting to warm up. So let’s take a well-earned moment to rest, relax, and close your eyes to imagine a beautiful spring day. The sky is clear and blue, and the sun is shining warmly on the beautiful, lush landscape in the background as a musical cacophony of children laughing and birds chirping in blooming trees engulf you in a harmonious atmosphere.
We’re grateful to bask in the nature that exists due to the amazing work that billions of people around the world have done in investing time and effort to keep our Earth safe and healthy.
Earth Day was originally coined in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin as a means to create support for the Environmental Protection Agency after witnessing the aftermath of an oil spill in Santa Barbara. His efforts then contributed to the Clean Air Act, Water Quality Improvement Act, and several other environmental laws that still assist our planet today. What once started as an American call to action has now flourished into a global movement; one that anyone of any age can be a part of.
This year’s Earth Day theme is “investing in our planet”, a continuation of last year’s mission in honoring the achievements of the environmental movements and efforts to raise awareness of the urgency to protect Earth’s natural resources for our communities and future generations. Now is the time to strengthen our relationship with nature, and to give back and support the environment that already offers us so much.
Celebrating Earth Day
The goal of this theme is also focused on engaging more people across the world, including governments, businesses, and other institutions, to help accelerate the transition to a flourishing green economy for everyone. When we work together, we can reframe the conversation and accelerate the drive and momentum to reach our goals toward a greener Earth.
We know it can be a little intimidating or challenging to find a place to start, as these environmental issues can feel impossible to tackle as a single individual. However, a Chinese proverb tells us, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is now”.
It’s never too late to start taking individual action to invest in our planet. Anyone can start with small, easy steps and keep moving upward, or you can start with tougher tasks and join a larger group’s endeavors to help your community.
Whether you take civic action like messaging Congress and voting for more environmentally friendly legislation, or participating in something personal such as starting up a garden or even grabbing a group of friends to pick up litter alongside the road; every bit counts. No matter how small or big, your actions have a direct impact on the world around you.
