How to Recognize Kentucky Coffee Trees
Did you know? Kentucky Coffee trees are actually quite adaptable to Colorado’s soil conditions. Though these trees typically prefer moist, nutrient-rich soils, they can acclimate to clay and alkaline conditions.
While these trees do need proper, consistent watering when they’re young, once they’ve established, they’re quite tolerant to droughts, making them a great option for Denver’s urban canopy. Better still, they grow over a foot per year when they’re younger and grow a wide canopy, which makes for excellent shade trees.
Kentucky Coffee trees are fairly easy to recognize with their green seed pods. These pods can be anywhere between 5-10 inches in length and turn brown as the seasons change. These pods can contain harmful toxins, so be sure to keep a watchful eye over your kids and pets!
They also produce greenish-white flowers as the leaves mature in late spring. Unlike the stinky blooms on the Chanteclair pear, Kentucky coffee blooms smell quite lovely.
How to Care for Kentucky Coffee Trees
Luckily, Kentucky coffee trees don’t have many issues with pests or diseases. However, these trees can still experience some minor issues like webworms and caterpillars. This can be mitigated with an annual insect spray, which ArborScape can provide!
Kentucky coffee trees can also be susceptible to fungal diseases like leaf spot, which causes dark spots, and verticillium wilt, which is a vascular disease causing branch dieback and yellowing of leaves.
