The Fundamentals of Tree Fertilization

With Denver’s arid climate and sandy clay soils, you may find yourself in need of tree fertilization to help those roots get the nutrients they need for healthy growth.

Colorado is considered rough terrain for plants and wildlife alike due to our inconsistent climate and tendency for drought. Denver has temperatures that range from below zero in the winter,  to 100°-plus in the summer! Then dry winds whip across the high rockies and into the front range, leaving only the hardiest plants to survive.

Here at ArborScape, our certified arborists always make sure to check on the condition of the soil around the tree, as that is one of the telltale signs as to whether you’re in need of tree fertilization.

While not every tree needs fertilization, some may need an extra boost due to soil deficiencies in our area. Here, the soil lacks micronutrients such as nitrogen and potassium- important factors for a tree’s growth.

Signs to Look Out For

Remember to always keep an eye on your trees, as their overall health has a huge impact on your landscape. Here are some signs to look out for if you’re in need of tree fertilization.

The leaves on your tree will be smaller in growth than they usually are. These signs are usually due to the lack of nutrients in the soil; the roots aren’t able to gather enough to spread to the rest of the tree during the growing season.

Sometimes, you’ll notice patchy growth in the canopy as well. This is in part because of the branches producing smaller leaves, and some might not bloom at all so as to preserve energy.

Another symptom you’ll see when you’re in need of tree fertilization is an iron deficiency. This is where you’ll see the yellowing of the leaves, or a premature fall color. Tree leaves turn green with the help of chlorophyll, which is aided by iron. Without this, the leaves won’t stay green as long.

Luckily, our arborists have come up with treatment plans to give your soil the nutrients needed for effective tree fertilization.

Tree Fertilization Options

Iron Chlorosis: Because of the nutrient deficiencies in the soil requiring tree fertilization, we offer extra nutrient boosts alongside the fertilizations. Combined with the fertilizers, our iron treatments can help your tree flourish!

In fact, we’ve seen trees once thought dead come back to nearly full bloom after only a year of our treatments! With just a little TLC, we can help your trees reach their full potential.

Fall Deep Root Stimulator: This fertilizer is a soil injection that focuses more on stimulating root growth while the tree is dormant. The chemicals used in it include Rapture micronutrients and Mycorrhizae soil inoculate. By using these in autumn, we help minimize iron and nitrogen usage so as to not disrupt the dormancy cycle.

Spring Deep Root Fert: These springtime tree fertilizations are also a soil injection consisting of slow-release nitrogen that spreads through the tree’s entire root system rather than sitting just at the surface.

These nutrients will not just provide that pick-me-up that some trees may need after a bitter winter; these routine, annual treatments keep your tree healthy, which makes them less susceptible to bugs or diseases that are common in our area.

Like all of our treatments, these tree fertilizations are time-sensitive, so if you’re concerned about your tree for any reason, now is the time to call for a free estimate! Call us at (303) 806-8733 or visit our website to fill out a contact form and we’ll send one of our arborists out to look at your trees.
