When it's Time to Say Goodbye: When is it Time to Remove a Tree?

Sometimes it’s easy to see when a tree needs to be removed, like when a storm knocks it completely over, or if all its branches are dead. But there are other things that may require a tree removal.
- Disease: With our Colorado soils and temperatures, trees are already prone to stress, making them an easy target for pests to increase the damage. While we have treatment plans to keep your trees safe and healthy, sometimes the tree is too far gone to save.
- Maturity: With some species, after a certain point, the tree can’t properly absorb nutrients from the soil. This can cause the tree to start eating itself by sapping nutrients from its limbs and causing it to rot from the inside.
- Hollow Tree: Hollow trees can also act as a cozy home for all sorts of pests and critters that can then wreak havoc on the rest of your yard. Hollow trees are also weak and can be easily damaged in storms, potentially causing damage to your property.
Depending on the size of the tree, the scope of the work can range from a quick removal and cleanup, to a 3-day project.
When we arrive on site, our arborists evaluate the tree species, its age, its proximity to any buildings or structures, and what type of equipment we’ll need to safely and efficiently complete the job.

Initial Estimator's Assessment
Performed during your initial consultation for requested tree work, our estimators are trained to identify the entire scope of work to build an accurate, transparent proposal.
1. Structural Integrity & Tree Health Diagnostics
- Examines the root zone for compaction, girdling roots, soil heave, or compromised ground stability.
- Checks the trunk and canopy for internal hollows, any severe leaning, and any signs of pest or disease infestation.
- Utilizes ISA TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) guidelines to calculate wood strength, load distribution, and structural failure risks.
2. Scope & Target Mapping
- Identifies all high-value targets beneath or around the tree, such as other homes, any fences, outdoor structures, and neighboring properties.
- Notes overhead electrical and communication drop lines to identify necessary clearance requirements according to ANSI Z133 standards.
- Evaluates gate widths, any slope gradients, and ground conditions to select the correct equipment (such as ground-protection mats, bucket trucks, or specialized rigging) for the proposal.
Crew's On-Site Operational Assessment
Performed by the Crew Leader and arborists immediately upon arrival on job day before setting up equipment.
1. Dynamic Hazard & Weather Check
- Re-evaluates overhead hazards, recent weather changes, like saturated ground or high winds, and active target changes, such as parked cars or pets in neighboring yards.
- Confirms precise approach distances from electrical lines and ensures clearance before placing aerial lifts or climbing hardware.
2. Engineering & Rigging Plan
- Inspect tie-in points and load-bearing crotches in the tree canopy to verify wood integrity before climbing or rigging heavy sections.
- Set up specialized lowering blocks, friction brakes, and rigging ropes tailored to the job’s specific drop zones and limb weights.
3. Job-Site Safety & Crew Briefing
- Crew Leader conducts a job-site hazard review with all crew members to establish drop-zone boundaries, chip-zone paths, and two-way radio headset channels.
- Install turf protection mats over high-risk lawn areas and ensure all team members are equipped with required ANSI Z133 personal protective equipment (PPE).

ArborScape’s minimum trip fee for tree removals or trimming starts at $250. However, our arborists measure the tree to find the diameter of the trunk at chest height, then charge roughly $100-$150 per inch in diameter depending on other environmental factors, such as if the tree is growing into a fence, or if our crew needs specialized equipment, like a crane.
The City of Denver and the City of Aurora both require permits to remove Right of Way Trees, but not ones on your property. ArborScape will take care of that paperwork for you and communicate any issues.
